Retiring Chairperson of the Competitions Committee, David Shields, said “The work submitted this year was incredible. In the end it came down to a group of 14 outstanding images from across New Zealand that illustrated the creativity and technical skill of New Zealand hair stylists. All 272 stylists that entered the 400 images in this year competition should be incredibly proud of the effort they have put in to creating their images. The judges spent over 6 hours reviewing the images in the 5 sections of the competition, before they settled on the overall winner”.

“We congratulate the four finalists in each of the 14 NZARH Regions represented in this year’s Editorial Stylist competition, which is sponsored by L’Oréal Professionnel. The high standard of work continued across the Matrix sponsored Novice, Next Generation (sponsored by Redken), Le Male (sponsored by Fudge) and Colour (sponsored by Redken) sections”.

In choosing the overall winner judge and New Zealand hairdressing industry icon Lyndsay Loveridge described the winning image as being “so new and in a league of its own. Congratulations to a forward thinking stylist and a fantastic photographer”.

General Manager of Localist and award-winning Editor of Fashion Quarterly and Next magazines, Christina Sayer-Wickstead, was captivated by the originality of the image which she described as exquisite. Of the winning image Christina said, “It is arresting to the eye and works to draw the viewer in, bringing the eye to rest on the shot and drink in the combination of a gritty modern edge with glamorous beauty. The model was perfectly cast and the restrained styling was enhanced by the professional execution”.

“The winner should be proud of the result which would work just as well on the cover of Italian Vogue as a L’Oréal billboard in Times Square”.

Christina went on to say, “The tonal beauty of this shot, the directional experimentation in the hair and visual purity of the image make it a photo that will etch in the memory of many”.
