COVID-19 vaccine prioritisation for the hair industry
H&BNZ has been liaising with the Ministry of Health regarding prioritisation of the vaccine for the hair industry. You will find the MOH's response below.
The COVID-19 Immunisation Sequencing Framework has been developed by the Ministry of Health to protect everyone in New Zealand while there is limited supply of the vaccine. Priority groups are assessed on the basis of risk of exposure to the virus, and risk of serious illness if someone contracts COVID-19. We have sought to strike a careful balance between workforces and vulnerable people in the community should COVID-19 become widespread.
As you will be aware, Group 1 of the sequencing framework includes border and managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) workforces and the people they live with. Group 2 includes frontline healthcare workers who may expose more vulnerable people to COVID-19, and at-risk people living in settings with a high risk of transmission or exposure to COVID-19.
We have reviewed your workers’ circumstances, taking into account their workplaces and associated risks and on balance we have determined that individuals who work in hair salons and barber shops are not eligible for vaccine prioritisation or inclusion in Groups 1 and 2 at this stage.
It should be noted that workers who meet other criteria in the sequencing framework will be scheduled for vaccinations by district health boards in accordance with their placement in the sequencing framework. Vaccinations for Group 3 (older people and those with underlying health conditions) are currently underway throughout New Zealand.
The rollout for Group 4, the general population, is anticipated to begin on 28 July. Vaccinations for Group 4 will be staggered in age bands, each set two weeks apart. The first age band is for individuals aged 60 and over, beginning on 28 July. Those aged 55 and over will be able to book a vaccination appointment from 11 August. The rollout will progress through the age bands throughout the remainder of 2021, with all individuals being offered a vaccine by the end of the year.
