Auckland moves back to Alert Level 3, rest of New Zealand to Alert Level 2 as of 6am Sunday 28th February 2021
Our thoughts are with our Auckland hair whanau as the Prime Minister has announced Auckland will move to alert level 3 at 6am Sunday 28 February and the rest of New Zealand will move to alert level 2, for a period of 7 days.
For those in alert level 2, reminder NZARH strongly urges all hairstylists, barbers and clients to wear a mask, not only to protect yourself but also to protect clients and to help them feel safe.
Please ensure all clients use the QR code or sign in. Having both options available for clients to use is a legal requirement and remember 1 metre social distancing is to be adhered to in a salon or barbershop.

• If your business requires close physical contact it can’t operate. • Your staff should work from home if they can. • Keep contact tracing records of anyone who has close interaction, for example staff and contractors. Get your QR code poster here. • All businesses must display the government QR code poster for use with the NZ COVID Tracer App, by 19 August. • Customers cannot come onto your premises — unless you are a supermarket, dairy, petrol station, pharmacy or permitted health service. • Your business must be contactless. Your customers can pay online, over the phone or in a contactless way. Delivery or pick-up must also be contactless. • Basic hygiene measures must be maintained. Physical distancing, hand washing and regularly cleaning surfaces. Workers must stay home if they are sick. • Staff must remain a minimum of 1 metre apart at all times where practical. Other measures, such as PPE including face coverings, should be used where appropriate. • Different advice applies to essential healthcare workers, border agencies, courts and tribunal staff, first responders and corrections staff. Level 2 Main Points (rest of New Zealand):
Confirm clients are well, clients with any symptoms should be rescheduled.
Contact tracing – WorkSafe advise the use of the official covid-19 tracing app – Available HERE. NZARH Members can request their personalised QR Code from firstname.lastname@example.org
Maintain good hygiene, particularly hand hygiene-wash or sanitize hands between every client. Gloves should still be worn as PPE as per usual hair services.
Physical distance of 1 meter for staff and between clients – you can seat clients next to each other as long as not 2 hairdressers working on both clients e.g.one can be colour processing. As a stylist or barber you may need to position yourself to keep recommended distance from each other. You can also swivel the seat the client is in, so that the stylists are still positioned facing the mirror with you working on the side of the clients head.
As part of your standard PPE, Masks for staff and clients are recommended. The Ministry of Health has updated its advice on the use of face masks.
Clean cape for each client (this is considered as part of PPE).
Aprons to be worn by stylist/barber (this is considered as part of PPE).
Disinfect all surfaces between clients.
Serving drinks to be suspended in level 2. Our main aim at level 2 is to reduce contact to a minimum and lessen the chances of cross contamination. Coffee and tea containers, cups, coffee machine etc all need to be cleaned and sanitised between each use by stylists.This is time consuming and if not done properly risks contaminants to be spread. Encourage clients to bring a water bottle with them and grab a take away coffee or support local and arrange for a nearby café to supply take away drinks.
Beard trims, wet shaves and in salon add on beauty services: These are face fronting and for more than 15 mins. MOH suggests this time as the limit for face fronting services. We recommend these services be suspended until we return to level 1 or below.
These are strange times for us all and we encourage open and honest communication with your team along with encouraging them to eat well, drink lots of fluids especially when wearing masks, wash their hands …….and above all to be kind.
