There are usually so many winning finishes in every competition that the judges frequently have to look for reasons to eliminate a competitor.

Competitor Categories
New Talent

A competitor who has been in the hair industry for less than one (1) year as at 31st October 2020, including any full-time pre-trade course, or a fully contracted Apprentice under a HITO agreement. Eligibility is to be verified by the employer or training provider.

Next Generation

A competitor who has been employed within the hair industry for more than one (1) year but less than four (4) years as at 31st October 2020, including any full-time pre-trade course, or a fully contracted Apprentice under a HITO agreement. Eligibility is to be verified by the employer or training provider.

Senior

A competitor who has been employed in the hair industry for four (4) years or more, including any full-time pre-trade training courses as at the 31st October 2020.

Qualified competitors with under four years in the hair industry will compete as Next Generation.

Event Categories
Classic: Current Trend

The Classic is a cut, style or colour that you would expect the majority of clients in your salon or barbershop, would feel comfortable wearing. This style is usually a trend that is easily identified in fashion magazines and style guides and is usually client driven fashion. A competitor is capable of doing this style from an early stage in their career, therefore, all competitor categories (New Talent, Next Generation and Senior) are eligible to enter this event. The competitor should personalise this style to suit their model and create a flattering, beautiful interpretation of the cut or colour that is being executed. The main components of the haircut shape should take the classic shapes of The Bob, The Layer or Graduation and expand on these. In barbering a men's classic shape should be giving a modern, masterful, masculine interpretation. Classic, Current Trends should be executed with technical excellence in colouring, cutting and design interpretation skills.

Contemporary: Future Trend

Contemporary is a style that only the top 10% of clients would wear. The style is trend setting and pushes the limits but must still be beautiful. These looks are usually more technically challenging. The styles are competitor driven and often become the salon look for the following change in fashion. Because of the technical difficulty required to perform the design to an elevated level, we are restricting the competitors that can compete in this section (Next Generation and Senior only). The competitor should create a look that compliments the model and marries from top to toe whilst being edgy and strong. In the barbering event we are looking for the competitor to create ‘the next big trend' using technical excellence in men's cutting and design and the competitor’s ability to identify the future direction of men's hair fashion.

Editorial

The term Editorial usually refers to photography. Fashion photography is used to sell a physical item while Editorial photography is used to sell a total look, a story or convey a feeling to the person viewing the image. Our Editorial events should produce work that is of a standard that could grace the pages of hair and fashion magazines. Ask yourself “Is this beautiful, is this clever and does this show my skill as a hairdresser/barber to the industry? Does the hair I have created make my model more appealing, would I hang this art on my wall?’ We want to see beautiful work, and as judges we will be rewarding the beautiful.

Avant-Garde

The Avant-Garde (from French, "advance guard" or "vanguard", literally "fore guard") are people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to fashion, art, lifestyle or culture. The Avant-Garde pushes the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo. Avant-Garde is an approach to how one does things, a mindset that guides in how you think and create. It's about experimentation and introducing innovative ideas that look beyond societal norms of what is considered accepted. The competitors work and idea should push boundaries and reflect the forward thinking ideas of the Avant-Garde aesthetic.

Winners will be announced from each event.

The winning heads from each category will be judged against its other category winners to find the winner of each discipline.

NZARH Barber of The Year:Next Generation & Senior*

*The NZARH Hair Stylist of the Year Award and NZARH Barber of the Year Award at each host city will be presented to the competitor with the HIGHEST aggregate points from the competition day. (The competitor’s highest three (3) marks will be combined).

To qualify for this award a competitor MUST compete in a minimum of three (3) events during the day – Two (2) of which MUST be LIVE EVENTS (Event 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 8).

The winners of the following awards who are employed by a member, enrolled with a Training Provider Member or are an individual financial member of the NZARH will automatically qualify to compete at the National Supreme Awards.

Any competitor who wins an event at an NZARH Host City Competition and subsequently changes his/her place of employment or study automatically loses the right to compete at that year’s Supreme Awards.*

The Perpetual Trophy is retained by the salon from which it was won. The competitor can retain their small trophy. If this occurs the next eligible stylist with the highest marks from the judges on the day of the NZARH Competition will take their place.

General Rules
General Rules
  1. The two-floor competition will apply. Floor 1 for Hairdressing Events and Floor 2 for Barbering Events.
  2. All competitors must be employed by or be a financial member of NZARH.
  3. A competitor who is employed by a NZARH member salon must compete under the name of that salon name and cannot join NZARH as an individual Competitions Member.
  4. All entries must be on the official entry form and accompanied by the appropriate entry fee. Those entrants who have not paid their entry fee prior to the competition day will not be able to compete.
  5. All New Talent and Next Generation entries shall have a statement signed by their employer confirming years worked, including any full-time pre-trade courses.
  6. A competitor MAY NOT BE A MODEL IN ANY EVENT.
  7. Models must be 16 years of age or older.
  8. Competitors shall supply all the equipment they require.
  9. Only products from the Official Supporters List are to be used on the competition floor.
  10. All electrical equipment must be tested and tagged. Any un-tagged electrical equipment must not be used.
  11. All work shall be the work of the competitor.
  12. In Cutting events all heads of hair must be reshaped and shortened. No guidelines are to be pre-cut. If hair pieces/extensions are allowed they must also be reshaped and shortened within the time allowed.
  13. All competitors must indicate if they are unavailable to compete at the New Zealand Hairstylist of the Year Awards. (In a Supremes’ Year)
  14. Members of the NZARH Competitions Committee are not eligible to compete at the New Zealand Hairstylist of the Year Awards.
  15. While any competition is in progress, scrutineers will be on the floor and competitors will observe their directions. There will be one scrutineer per six competitors. Scrutineers must meet with the Steward half an hour prior to the start of the competition day. Scrutineers do not need to be qualified stylists.
  16. Any competitor on the floor with any complaint or query is to refer the complaint or query through a Scrutineer to the Steward.
  17. A competitor who is known to have contravened the rules prior to or during the competition will be disqualified (This can only be done by the Steward) and awarded no marks (0 will be entered into the marking sheet).
  18. If a competitor has been disqualified, the Steward will notify them after the judging of the event.
  19. Prior to judging, capes will be removed by the competitor.
  20. The use of cutting stools on the competition floor is dependent on the venue. Please check with NZARH.
  21. The official placing in all events shall be final. Competitors may be personally advised by the NZARH Competitions Committee of their total points for events entered upon written request.
  22. Models used in Events 1, 3 & 5 may be used in Event 9 and Models used in event 4 & 6 may be used in Event 10, provided the hairstyle remains unchanged.
  23. Competitors and models (as presented on the floor) must be present at prize giving. Extenuating circumstances will be taken into consideration, if written notification is supplied to the Steward prior to prize giving. Failure to comply may mean forfeiture of prizes.
  24. NZARH New Zealand Hairstylist of the Year Awards prizes cannot be redeemed for cash.

    2. All styling aids must be removed prior to the start of the event.
    3. Hairpieces/extensions may be used but should be incorporated into the models own hair on the competition floor within the time allowed.
    4. This is NOT a long hair-up event.
    5. Wigs are forbidden.

    Judging Formula: Technical excellence and creative ability in design skills and total look of the model.

    Fashion Forward Barber Cut for Next Generation and Senior

    1. The colour must compliment the style, be technically well executed and show clever placement.
    2. The cut must show technical excellence in the competitor’s cutting ability.
    3. The cut should be looking at future trends BUT NOT be Avant-Garde.
    4. The hairstyle must be shortened and reshaped.
    5. The use of colour is optional but if coloured it must relate to the finished look.
    6. Hairpieces/extensions may be used.
    7. Facial hair design can be pre done. Any ‘hair art or tattooing’ that is within the hairstyle must be done on the floor.
    8. Wigs are forbidden.

    Technical excellence in barbering, the barber’s ability to predict the future direction of hair fashion and the model’s total look.

    Long hair styling for New Talent, Next Generation and Senior

    Create beautiful styling on long hair with pure technical artistry.

    Live Event

    Time Allowed: 50 minutes

    Instructions

    1. The style must show technical excellence in the competitor’s styling ability.
    2. The whole style must be worked and created on the floor.
    3. Styling of the models own hair must be done on the floor.
    4. The look created could range from formal styling, wedding hair, day or evening wear to a fashion shoot, magazine image or fashion show. The work must be complimented by the total look of the model.
    5. Hairpieces/extensions may be used but must be added on the competition floor within the time allowed.

    Judging Formula: Technical excellence of the design and shape, balance and proportion and total look of the model.

    5. Hairpieces/extensions may be used.
    6. Wigs are forbidden.

    Judging Formula: Technical excellence in cutting, the stylist’s ability to predict the future direction of hair fashion and the models total look.

    Beard Design for New Talent, Next Generation and Senior

    Execute a Beard Design shaping with technical excellence

    Time Allowed: 30 minutes

    Instructions

    1. The Beard Design and Shape must show technical excellence in the competitor’s barbering ability.
    2. The beard area to be judged will be from the top of the ear down the face stopping where the neck meets the collar bone at the front of the neck. And on the neck from the sides of the neck in line with where the ears attach to the face.
    3. The beard can include the moustache area within the design.
    4. The beard should complement the face shape and haircut of the model.
    5. Wigs are forbidden.

    Judging Formula: Technical excellence in barbering skills and total look of the model.

    Cutting for New Talent, Next Generation and Senior

    LiveEvent

    Time Allowed: 50 minutes

    Instructions

    1. The hair art must show technical excellence in the competitor’s barbering ability.
    2. The hair art is to be started and completed within the time allowed.
    3. Any haircut styling can be pre done.
    4. The hair art design can be incorporated into a beard shape but must also be done on the competition floor.
    5. Wigs are forbidden.

    Event 9 – Colour: Classic Colour: Current Trend; Ombré

    Colouring for New Talent, Next Generation and Senior

    Ombré is the gradual blending of one colour hue to another, usually moving tones and shading from light to dark or warm to cool. Take current salon colour techniques used to create beautiful, balanced Ombré and create a stunning colour that could be used by a colour company to promote salon sellable images.

    Presentation Event

    Time Allowed: 5 minutes

    Instructions

    1. The colour must compliment the style, be technically well executed and show clever placement.
    2. All colour work must be pre-done by the competitor prior to arrival at the venue.
    3. Multiple entries are allowed.
    4. New models and models from Events 1, 3 and 5 may be used (models from Events 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8 cannot be used in this event).
    5. Models from Events 1,3 and 5 must not have had their hair changed in any way between the original event and the beginning of Event 9 (Colour: Current Trend: Ombre).
    6. Hairpieces/extensions may be used.
    7. Wigs are forbidden.

    Judging Formula: Beautiful Colour interpretation created with technical excellence and total look of the model.

    Colouring for New Talent, Next Generation and Senior

    Presentation Event

    Time Allowed: 5 minutes

    Instructions

    1. The colour must compliment the style, be technically well executed and show clever placement.
    2. All colour work must be pre-done by the competitor prior to arrival at the venue.
    3. Multiple entries are allowed.
    4. New models and models from Events 4 and 6, may be used (models from Events 1, 2, 3 and 9 cannot be used in this event).
    5. Models from Events 4 and 6 must not have had their hair changed in any way between the original event and the beginning of Event 10 (Colour: Future Trend).
    6. Wigs are forbidden.

    Judging Formula: Technical excellence in colour, the stylist's ability to predict the future direction of hair fashion and the model’s total look.

    Event 11 – Design: Hair Unleashed: Avant-Garde

    Creative Styling for Next Generation and Senior

    Creating a masterpiece using hair as your medium and pure technical artistry to tell your story

    Presentation Event

    Time Allowed: 15 minutes

    Instructions

    1. The style must show technical excellence in the competitor’s styling ability.
    2. Hairpieces/extensions may be used.

    Judging Formula: Taking your design skills to the next level. Creating a masterpiece using hair as your medium and pure technical artistry to tell your story. There must be a cohesive theme between the hair and the total look.

    Organising Committee Guidelines

    Administration and Floor Control

    1. The Competitor’s programme must include the following instructions for competitions:

    • Reporting time for competitors and models — 30 minutes prior to the start of the first event for the day, 11.30am. Events may be brought forward at Steward’s discretion. Competing time allowed for each event
    • Competing time allowed for each event.
    • Equipment required or allowed, including whether or not cutting stools are permitted on the competition floor.
    • Entry fees.
    • Maximum entries per event: Numbers to be set by each local organising committee. As events include New Talent, Next Generation and Senior, entries will be accepted until the maximum number is reached regardless of status.
    • The programme and timetable as supplied by Competitions Committee will be the same for all organised events. Note: Competition day can commence later but the order of events must stay the same.

    • Qualifying date: 31 October 2020.

    2. All competitors must be employed by or be a financial member of NZARH or engaged in training at a Training Provider who is a NZARH member. Hours are to be verified by employer

    3. An official printed programme for spectators must be provided, using the 2019 Editorial Stylist of the Year winner’s photo and listing the location of salons

    4. Each event will start with an audible signal. Event starting time will not be delayed for Competitors to remove styling aids or tools. Competitors in each event will not work on models before the first signal or after the final signal. Time should be called five minutes before the finish of each event. In each event rollers, pins, etc shall be removed at the request of the Steward. One person shall be appointed as the official time-keeper.

    5. Mirror numbers will be placed in sequence (eg. starting No.1 from where the judges enter). The sequence will leave gaps where there are no competitors. i.e. If a competitor is scratched the mirror number will be left vacant.

    6. Note to Organising Committee
    The following should be sent to the Steward/Judges no later than 14 days before the competition:

    • Official notification of the Rules and Events.
    • The name of the Competitions Organiser for the day.
    • The names of Judges on the Judging Panel, including Trainees, Guest Judges, plus Compere, Computing personnel, Floor Scrutineers, etc.

    7. The Host City representatives shall host the Steward and Judges (including Trainee Stewards, Guest and Trainee Judges), throughout the day, including suitable meal and refreshments. The Judges’ Room should have all modern conveniences, be well ventilated and be inaccessible to all other persons. The Judges Room must be available for briefing no less than 2 hours before commencement of first event.

    8. Competitors who are late may only take the floor at the Steward’s discretion.

    9. It is the responsibility of NZARH to organise:

    • One night’s accommodation for Stewards & Judges.
    • Dinner and breakfast if required.
    • Transport to and from airport and competition venue.
    • Contact officials with confirmation of these arrangements.
    • Meal and refreshments throughout the day/evening.
    • Non-smoking room - smoking area.
    • Emergency contact phone number on day for the competition organisers, Judges and Stewards.

    10. Stewards, Judges or Trainees should not have to share the same room or be billeted unless there is a clear understanding and agreement by those concerned and must also not stay with salon owners or staff that are competing on the night before the event. However, shared accommodation such as Airbnb will be used from time to time.

    11. Complaints

    • Any complaints received by the organising committee, must be sent in writing to the Competitions Committee within 14 days of the event.
    • Any Steward or Judge who feels they have not been treated fairly when undertaking official duties shall make their complaint in writing to the Competitions Committee within 14 days of the event.
    • The Competitions Committee has the authority for a member to have access to Judges’ areas at all regional and national competitions as an observer (unless a competitor or staff member is competing).

    12. Perpetual trophies must be returned to local associations prior to the following year’s local competitions. Winners of all perpetual trophies must sign the form provided in the competition folder.

    13. All competitors must receive confirmation and a registration form to present on competition day.

    Perpetual Trophies

    • All perpetual trophies shall remain in the Salon they were won from until they are recalled by NZARH Competitions Committee.
    • Where the winner is an individual NZARH Competitions Member, the trophy is to remain with the winner.
    • The responsibility for trophies is that of the competitor and his/her current employing NZARH Salon. They must ensure that the trophy/trophies are returned to the NZARH in the same condition as on presentation. Repair costs will be charged to the Salon/competitor concerned.
    • Perpetual trophies must be returned to NZARH at least two weeks prior to the following year’s local competitions.
    • Trophies must be engraved with the winner’s name and the year. A Salon name can be included in the engraving, but it must be the name of the NZARH member salon under which the competitor has entered the competition and is employed at, at the time of the competition. All trophies must remain in that Salon until the next competition is held.

    Queries or Recommendations

    The Competitions Committee will answer any queries and consider any recommendations from any interested party if presented to the Competitions Committee in writing.

    Official Competitions

    No competition is considered an official event of the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers unless the Section Rules and Regulations of the Competitions Committee are abided by.

    Judges and Stewards

    1. Criteria

    Judges must be actively engaged in the hairdressing or barbering industry, have technical and practical experience in the work performed by the competitors they are to judge, have a current Certificate of Registration, be a member, or employed by a member of the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers, and must compete in Competition events biennially, unless special dispensation has been received from the Competitions Committee. There is no requirement for the Stewards to compete in the competition arena, but they must pass the written exam if requested to do so by the Competitions Committee of NZARH.

    • A Judge or Steward who is no longer a member or is no longer employed by a member of the NZARH may not stay on the Judging/Stewarding panel. If they are not employed by a full member Salon they must step down from the panel or join in their own right.
    • All Judges and Stewards (including Trainee/Guest Judges) must attend the annual Judges & Stewards Seminar. A skype or conference call can be used in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the Competitions Committee.
    • Judges and Stewards must be on the Official Judge’s & Steward’s List before they can be appointed to judge on any judging panel. This includes Trainee/Guest Judges/Trainee Stewards.
    • The Competitions Committee (after due consideration) may remove a Judges or Stewards name from the official list at any time after notifying the person concerned.
    • After consideration the Competitions Committee has the right to request Judges to do Trainee or Guest Judging positions for specific reasons, such as not having had an assignment over a period of time, lack of familiarity with the judging system or poor performance.
    • Judges, Stewards, Guest and Trainee Judges and Trainee Stewards must have active involvement in the organisation of competitions and Association matters where requested.
    • Judges must report to the competition venue 2 hours before competition starting time.
    • Judges, Stewards, Guest and Trainee Judges and Trainee Stewards must not allow their staff, work colleagues, family members or partner to compete in areas to which they have been appointed to Judge, Steward or be a Trainee. This does not apply to the panel appointed by the Competitions Committee for the New Zealand Hairstylist of the Year awards.
    • j) Within 7 days of a judging appointment the Competitions Committee will send a survey to be completed by the Foreperson Judge and Steward which is to be completed within 2 weeks.
    • No more than two Trainee/Guest Judges and two Trainee Stewards from the official list are to be added to the panel for NZARH competitions unless authorised by the Foreperson Judge or Steward.
    • Are expected to attend the annual Judges and Stewards Competitions Awareness Seminar at a cost of $402.50 incl GST for the 2020 year. Payments are required no later than Friday 28 February.

    2. Foreperson Judge’s Duties and Responsibilities

    • Will be appointed by the Competitions Committee.
    • Will be available to accept up to two appointments on a judging panel in any one year.
    • Must attend the annual Judges & Stewards Competitions Awareness seminar unless Competition Committee permission is granted beforehand when extenuating circumstances prevent attendance.
    • Must arrive at the competition venue 2 hours before commencement on the day with a well prepared, detailed presentation for the briefing of any Trainee/Guest Judges followed by briefing of the Judging Panel, be prepared to stay later to complete all paperwork and be seen to be available to all competitors at the conclusion of the day.
    • Notify their panel at least two weeks prior to the appointment, requesting details and advising expected input.
    • May speak to the panel on the floor if necessary.
    • Should work within the specified timetable.
    • Within 7 days of competition the Competitions Committee will send a survey to gauge the progress of all Judges and Stewards which must be completed within 2 weeks.
    • Must attain the status of Steward or Trainee Steward.
    • Set aside time for feedback (one on one) with each Judge before Prizegiving. This is for both positive feedback and/or constructive criticism.

    3. Steward’s Duties and Responsibilities

    • The prime objective of a Steward is to ensure that the competition is run fairly, and the welfare of the competitors is preserved.
    • Will be available to accept at least one appointment in any one year.
    • Observation of timetable.
    • Observation of computation of judges’ marks and averaging.
    • To arbitrate on any dispute pertaining to the interpretation of these regulations.
    • The Steward has the SOLE responsibility of disqualifying a competitor for a breach of a written rule. They must stand by any disqualification and must advise the Foreperson Judge of any disqualification PRIOR to judging (no marks). The competitor is to be informed directly after the completion of judging.
    • Within 7 days of a judging appointment the Competitions Committee will send a survey to be completed by all Stewards which is to be completed within 2 weeks.
    • To meet with Trainee Stewards two hours before start of competitions on the day for a briefing.
    • Within 7 days of a judging appointment the Competitions Committee will send a survey to be completed by all Trainee Stewards which is to be completed within 2 weeks.
    • A Steward must be on the Official Steward’s List.
    • A Steward must attain the status of Judge.
    • m) Are expected to attend the annual Judges and Stewards Competitions Awareness Seminar at a cost of $402.50 incl GST for the 2020 year. Payments are required no later than Friday 28 February.

    4. Appointments

    Judges and Stewards will be appointed by the Competitions Committee.

    5. Expenses

    • The Competitions Committee will operate an account to cover travel expenses of the Stewards and Judges.
    • It is the duty of the Host City organisers and NZARH to offer necessary accommodation to their Judging Panel and Steward and notify them of the arrangements made.
    • Judges and Stewards will only be asked to drive to a competition where the car journey is no longer than 3 hours.

    6. Foreperson’s Absence or Late Arrival

    If the Foreperson has not arrived within one hour of the first event starting, the next most experienced Judge will act with the same authority.

    7. Standard of Grooming

    It is compulsory that Judges and Stewards are groomed and present a professional image. Hats should not, at any time, during judging or stewarding be worn on the competition floor. The wearing of denim is also forbidden on the competition floor when judging or stewarding.

    8. Application to become a Judge or Steward

    Any person who has the required criteria can apply through the NZARH (on the official application form) to the Competitions Committee to become a Trainee Judge or Trainee Steward. After the application is approved the Competitions Committee will appoint up to 2 trainee positions from the preferred options supplied by the Trainee Judges and Stewards to be included on the panel as a Trainee Judge or Trainee Steward. The Competitions Committee will notify the Trainee Judge/Steward when the required standard has been attained and will provide a report to Judge/Steward each year.

    Applications to become a Judge or Steward must be received by the Chairperson of the Competitions Committee no later than 21 February 2020.

    Criteria:

    • Being actively involved in the hairdressing industry.
    • Having had four years continuous hairdressing experience.
    • Having attained New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 4 Professional Stylist), National Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 4) or Trade Certificate in Hairdressing or been hairdressing prior to 1968 (Auckland prior to 1973) New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering (Level 3), National Certificate in Barbering (level 4) or a qualification deemed equivalent by HITO.
    • Four years of continuous participation in competitions. Having been the winner of at least three different competitions (can include photographic, product company competitions and MUST include NZARH Competitions).
    • Being actively involved in training staff.

    9. Guest Judge - Definition

    A Guest Judge is a person who has had previous judging experience but who has not judged for a period of two years or more. Any Judge that has not judged for the duration of a year, will be reassessed on a case-by-case basis and maybe asked to be a Guest Judge. A Guest Judging appointment gives the opportunity for that person to become familiar and updated on the judging system. All costs to be met by the Guest Judge.

    10. Guest Judges, Trainee Judges and Trainee Stewards

    • The Competitions Committee will appoint up to 2 trainee positions from the preferred options supplied by Trainee Judges.
    • Must meet all their own expenses.
    • Trainee Judges/Guest Judges must act and mark all sections of the day but their points are not counted.
    • All marking sheets must be handed to the Steward.
    • Are expected to abide by the rules laid down by the Competitions Committee. (Refer to written rules)
    • Are expected to attend the annual Judges and Stewards Competitions Awareness Seminar at a cost of $402.50 incl GST for the 2020 year. Payments are required no later than Friday 28 February.

    11. Change of Details

    It is the responsibility of any Judge, Steward or Trainee to immediately advise the Competitions Committee of any change of Salon or address details.

    Computing and Scaling Marks - Brief Summary

    TWO reliable people must be appointed for this duty.

    1. The Judges’ marks shall be transferred to a master sheet which should be prepared in advance including the name of the event.
    2. Names of the Judges, totals, placings and adjustments for averaging, if necessary.
    3. Trainee/Guest Judges’ marks are not counted.
    4. Where one Judge is more than 5 marks above or below the average of the other two Judges, this mark is then brought to within 5 Marks of the average. If the average of the two closest Judges is not a whole number, then the average shall be rounded up.

    Example: Judge

    Total 77

    The average of A and C is 29 marks, B is 10 marks “out” from the average (29-19 =10). This is brought to within 5 marks of the average 29 (10-5 = 5).

    Judge B’s mark is altered by 5 marks.

    A + B + C =Total

    30 +19 (+5) 28 +77(+5) = 82

    5. It is also necessary to deduct marks where one Judge has marked too high and a similar method to the above would be used.

    6. Where two Competitors gain equal marks in one event, the Foreperson’s mark will decide which Competitor will gain the higher placing. If the Foreperson has given the Competitors equal marks, the Foreperson will be asked to make a casting vote.

    Judging

    a) Each Judge shall clearly identify the first 4 placings by a score of 30, 29, 28, and 27, with 30 being 1st place and 27 being 4th place. The remaining placings may fall anywhere between a high of 25 and a low of 15 inclusive (27 is not used) with the exception of a disqualification, which receives no marks.

    b) When 3 placings are to be announced (6 or 7 competitors), these marks will be 30, 29, 28. Remaining places fall between 26 and 15. (27 is not used)

    c) When 2 placings are to be announced (4 or 5 competitors), these marks will be 30 and 29. Remaining places fall between 27 and 15. (28 is not used)

    d) When 1 placing is to be announced (1-3 competitors) that placing will be identified by a 30. The remaining places may fall anywhere between 28 and 15. (29 is not used).

    e) Discrepancies shall be directed to the Foreperson Judge.

    f) Where three (3) placings or more are to be announced the highest marks of 30, 29 and 28 must be allocated to the top three (3) competitors.

    Where one (1) or two (2) placings are to be announced, and the standard of the work presented is below the standard that would be expected on the competition floor, the Foreperson Judge may direct the Judging Panel to allocate the 1st and 2nd placed heads 26 (1st place) and 25 (2nd place) marks with the next competitor being awarded 23 marks (24 is not used).
